Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California

What are my options when collections agencies require payment in full and I can

I have several credit cards, all with balances ranging from $1500 to $5000. More than one are in collections and the agencies are demanding payment in full or are planning to file a suit for the amounts. I can not pay the full amounts nor can I make even minimum payments to all of the cards as the minimums are hundreds of dollars due to interest rates. I do not want to file bankruptcy and am seeking a job asap but I don't know how to get out of this situation without major problems for years with credit and finances. Are there any alternatives to filing bankruptcy such as asking for a reprieve time or applying for a grant to pay off my debts. Are grants available for this purpose. I need help desperately. Thank you.
