If I already received a summons can I resolve the issues outside of court?

Talk to the other side and try to settle case, but under no circumstances let the time to file a reply with the court run. If you do not file a response within the allotted time which is generally 30 days or what ever it says on the summons the other side will get a default judgment against you and it will be much more difficult to resolve the matter with them.
