Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California

statute of limitations on medical invoice

A collection agency on behalf of a client representing a hospital is trying to collect expenses from a surgery which occurred on 3/21/01. It's the first I've heard of the unpaid balance. Before I start digging through cancelled checks and requesting old credit card bills, is the statute of limitations still 4 yrs for this type of debt? Their letter is dated 11/14/05. Has it run?
