stolen check

if i mailed a check to a company and that check was recieved and cashed by someone else am i still responsible for the payment or does the company have to get from the guy who stole the check

You are still liable to the original person to whom you owed the money. You have the right to go after the person who stole the check - I would file a police report and pursue that avenue, but as to the original creditor, he was not paid and is owed the money.
