he killed my son

the man accused of my sons murder went to the police station gave a statement and they let him go.what can i do to ensure they are doing a thorough investigation.

You can always hire an attorney for the purpose of a civil wrongful death lawsuit. Such attorney could put pressure and exercise some control over what the police are doing.

Otherwise, keep calling and asking questions. If you feel the police are completely failing in their duties (not very likely) you can always complain to their supervisor and/or try to go to the press.
