No. Wait until the day before trial to hire a lawyer. That way your lawyer will have had a whole day to prepare the case. I'm kidding of course. For best results bring your lawyer with you to court on the first court date.

It is called an arraignment. You are always entitled to represent yourself in court. Whether you should is a different issue. The conventional wisdom is that an attorney will be able to do a better job and get a better outcome. Prosecutors don�t like dealing with ProPers, unless you are simply pleading guilty, not defending the case.
