Legal Question in Criminal Law in California

public intoxication

I was arrested in sonoma county recently for public intoxication. I am 23 years old and live in Canada. I want to avoid any warrants or penalties other than fines and would like not to be banned from the state or anything. I have a vacation planned in asia that takes place during my court date of june 15th. I have never been charged with any other crimes in canada and never been arrested before in the US. I did not resist the officers in any way at or during my arrest or night in jail. How severe are the penalties? Can I avoid the 20 hour drive to the court that will cancel my vacation?

Thanks

Re: public intoxication

Often the court will settle the matter with credit for time served, that is the amount of time from the arrest to your release from jail. However, if you fail to appear a warrant for your arrest will be issued. Call the court and ask the court clerk if you can pay a fine and have the court forfiet it if you fail to appear. If that court will not do that then your cheapest way may to to retain an attorney to appear for you and settle the matter.
