Legal Question in Entertainment Law in California

Conflict of interest?

I own a website which will exchange equipment use for video content, (i.e. we wave the rental fee if we can post their work then turn profit on advertisements). My friend wants to produce a film and wants me to direct. If I work as a director on one of these amatuer projects then make a profit by posting it, is that a conflict of interest?

Re: Conflict of interest?

Well, yes, it is a conflict of interest, especially if you don't OWN the film. (Your friend the producer will own it, if the paperwork is done correctly). Technically, if you don't own the copyright... it's illegal for you to post it online.

But otherwise... so what if it's a conflict of interest? You're not bound by any rules of ethics or anything... so, if you're willing to lose the friendship with this producer friend... go for it....

OR, you could talk about it up-front and decide who gets to do what with the finished product... that way, there'll be no hard feelings!
