Mobile DJ

I am a Mobile DJ. I want to promote my services through a free promotional mix. Is it illegal to distribute a promotional mix of music by various artists?

See the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) website for information on licensing the music. There are specific licenses for DJs which can be purchased through ASCAP.

Yes, it's illegal. You'd have to obtain a license from each record company and/or artist before making copies of their copyrighted material in your promotional mix.
