Legal Question in Family Law in California

name change with dmv to match ssn

I was recently married. I went to the SSA to change my name to my married name. When they asked how I would like my name to appear, I told them to put only my first initial since I have not used my full first name in several years. So my name with the SSA is now first initial, full middle name, married surname. When I went to the DMV, they said that they can't process because my old ID card has my full first name and the info would not match up to SSA records. They claim they cannot use initials on ID cards and that I have to now get my name legally changed to the initial. Do I? Is there no provision in the law that says I can legally use my first initial without having to go through the entire name change process if the name is already in use with the Social Security Administration? What do I do?

Re: name change with dmv to match ssn

you are legally allowed to use whatever name you want without getting it changed legally but that doesnt mean the DMV will change their records.
