Legal Question in Family Law in California
Common Law
I have been living with my ex-husband for the past 5 years. We have a non sexual relationship. He is now facing claims from the IRS and hopital bills which he can not pay. Might the state of CA, under common law marrige laws have any way to hold me legally responsible for his debts?

Re: Common Law
Good news. There is no such thing as a "common law" marriage in California.
Since you are mere "roommates", the only way you might be responsible for his debts would be if the IRS is looking at income earned when you were married or any debts which might have been incurred while you were married.
Good Luck.
Re: Common Law
California has no provision for a common law marriage. No matter how long you live together you will not be married. If you are divorced as suggested by your posting then his creditors would have no claim against you, unless you applied for credit with him or agreed that you would be liable for the debt.
