Legal Question in Family Law in California

custody

I am a single mother of a 7 month old baby. I am not currently employed and residing with a friend at the moment. During a heated argument with him comments were made that left me under the impression that there is a good chance that if I let him see the baby for a visit he might not give him back. Because there is NOT a custody court order as of yet, there is nothing that the police can do for me to get him back (I have already checked). How can I get an attorney that will help me and my son? Is it possible to have the father liable for attorney fees? Or any that do pro-bono work?

Re: custody

Call your local court and see if they have a family law facilitator to help you with the forms you need to file.

Re: custody

The family law facilitator may be able to help you complete the forms but cannot give you advice. You should get a consultation with an attorney to go over you situation in detail to avoid any problems and give you advice. I good attorney will tell you if they think that the facilitators office can complete the job and protect you. Most attorneys would require some type of retainer, but probably can get the court to order the father to pay most of your fees. That is something that you can discuss with an attorney.
