debt

If a wife incurs a debt in California, is the husband also responsible for it?

It depends on whether or not the debt was incurred during marriage and what it was incurred for. We presume that debts incurred during marriage are community debts, but there are exceptions, and we presume that debts incurred after the parties separate are separate debts, but they could be considered community if incurred for the "necessaries" of life or if incurred for a community property purpose like preserving a community asset.
