Legal Question in Family Law in California

Divorce questions

My husband has been physically, verbally, and mentally abusive plus he has been cheating on me and refused to sleep with me from day one. I want a divorce but have severe Lupus and want to know if I can ask for him to keep paying for my medical insurance for a certain period of time. Also, he totalled my old (paid off) car and the car he replaced it with he put in his name. Is there anything I can do? I also put him through college with the promise that after marriage he would help me through school and that never happened. We have no children. I never legally changed my maiden name to his last name either. How long will this process take and what is the best way to go about it? Also, how much does a divorce cost?

Thank you.

You have many issues, most of which require more detail before an opinion can be provided. As to medical insurance, he will probably be required to maintain you on his insurance until your marital status is terminated, and at that point you are probably eligible for COBRA coverage for a period of 18 months thereafter.

For a specific opinion regarding your individual circumstances, I suggest that you consult with an experienced family law lawyer. Experience is not expensive, it's priceless!
