what is a typical amount for child support, for one child?

There is no "typical" amount. Child support is based upon a math formula, the dominant parts of which are how much do each of the parent's earn and what is the time each parent spends with the child, with some other factors that tweak it. So at its simplest, equal income, equal timeshare, no child support. One parent makes more, equal timeshre, parent making more pays support.

If the Dept of Child Support Services is commencing a support action, they have a "default" schedule of what are the basic needs of a child, which last I looked is between $400 and $500, and they will impose that amount if the parent doesn't respond to the action. But that amount may be high or low depending on the "guideline" formula.
