Legal Question in Family Law in California

My friend recently died. She had legal custody of her granddaughter since she was 3mo.(daughters child). Friends son wants custody of her now. She is now 12 yrs. old. How does he go about getting custody of her? He has been the only male figure in the household since he was 12. He is now 22. Any point in the right direction is appreciated.

If he is her blood uncle, he can petition the court for custody. Try calling legal aid, but I would stay away from the legal authorities until you have a clear idea where you are headed, so she does not end up in foster care. Good luck!
