Legal Question in Civil Litigation in California

Accident involving a dog

Am I legally required to pay the vet bills of a dog I hit with my car? The dog was loose in the street. I tried, but couldn't avoid the dog. We have a leash law in this county. The dog ran off and I did not know who the owner was. I eventually found the owner, and learned the dog had been taken to the vet. Now he wants me to pay the bills.

You would only be required to pay if he can proove you were negligent. You, on the other hand, could show that he was negligent by allowing his dog to run loose. He would most likely lose if it went to court.

Tell him to pay his own bills. You could counter with a claim for the damage to your vehicle if he brings a small claims action against you.
