Legal Question in Civil Litigation in California

I bought a dirtbike from a guy on craigslist who bought the bike from the original owner but he didn't have the title I go to the DMV to get it registered and replace the title and they say the bike is registered to someone else. The original owner sold the bike to the person I bought it from in 2009 it's now 2012 the bike was never reported stolen. So the DMV made me pay 340 to register the bike just to get the owners info so I could write her and get authorization to give me the title so I write her and she said she sold the bike to a guy and he stilled owed her $1700 and she wouldn't release the title til I or he paid her. What can I do? Isn't her issue with him not me?

Ps and she wants me to keep it for the next 45 to 60 days til she can pick it up

All you bought was what the seller owned, which was the right to pay the rest of the $1,700 to get title and possession of the bike. She does not have to give you title and she can get the bike back on the basis of a breach of contract. You could charge her rent for the time you have to keep it for her or try to get her to reduce the amount owing.
