Legal Question in Civil Litigation in California

How to endorse and cash a check even though you disagree with the amount

My attorney returned the unused portion of my retainer and ended our contract. I want to cash the check, but disagree with the amount of the check and plan further litigation for the return of my retainer. How do I endorse the check to show my protest.

unless there has been a dispute indicated and anything provided that this payment is an an accord and satisfaction, then nothing is required; you might want to put "all rights reserved."

Since there is no release attached to the check, you can endorse it with just your name, and still make a demand for the remaining money that you believe you are owed.
