Legal Question in Civil Litigation in California

Lost Property

Hi. I am a 20 year old college student in california. When my family could not maintain my part of the rental agreement, my roommates found a subletter and payed the last month of rent for me. They possessed my laptop and guitar as collateral. After paying the sum owed back to them, I still owed the leasing office 200 dollars. I signed a promisary saying I would pay them back 462 dollars by may 1 and did so and the note also stated that I needed to pay back the leasing office by july 31st. My roommates collected 410 dollars from me on May 5, leaving 52 dollars I owed them, plus the leasing office 200 by july 31. They then proceded to sell my laptop, acoustic guitar and case, my skii's, ski boots, poles, goggles, and digital camera before the alotted July 31st deadline. Can I sue them for selling well over 252 dollars worth of items and now avoiding all phone calls especially because its not even July yet? I technically would have still owed them $52 and the leasing office $200 by July 31. Seeing as I origionally owed them $662 and payed them $410 and they then sold well over $252 dollars of items, arent I owed money, especially because they didnt wait for me to pay the office by July 31st? They also slandered my name.

Re: Lost Property

What they did was illegal. You should sue them in small claims.
