Legal Question in Civil Litigation in California

personal property being held in lieu of ''supposed'' indebtedness to ''friend''

I stayed with a friend for several months and when I had to go to Arkansas for family reasons, he volunteered to store my bed and approx. 10 med. moving boxes in his garage. When I tried to arrange pick up he stated that the bed had been there for 2 years and therefore it was his. And also that he was holding all property until I paid a bill for the time I was there. There was never an agreement for payment. What recourse do I have in securing the return of my bed and personal belongings.
