Legal Question in Civil Litigation in California

stolen property

For three years I stored a large trailer with 2 sea doo's and 2 jet skis in a locked area at my husband's work. The location was in the back of the business and off of a road less traveled. Back in July, for a period of several weeks the city was improving the road near the business. Apparently during this time they decided to detour the traffic for a few days. A large amount of cars had to then go past the back of the business using the detour. About a week later someone cut the locks and stold the trailer with the sea doo's and jet ski's. My question is whether or not I can file against the city for the loss. Are they required to notify businesses of the detour?

Thanks for your help.

Re: stolen property

No, the city is not required to notify anyone regarding detours and no the city is not liable for an unknown entity entering your fenced and locked property and stealing personal property therein.

You should immediately contact the DMV, local law enforcement with the serial numbers of the sea doo's and the trailer serial # and license. Whoever took them will eventually have to register them or get stopped for out of date registrations.

Not sure if they are required to notify of detour. However, they are not liable for your loss. Notify your homeowners insurance. They may cover.
