Legal Question in Civil Litigation in California

A week ago, I attempted to serve a three day notice to my tentant. Her son, who is over the age of 18, was the only person home. He refused to accept the notice in the absence of his mother. He told me to leave the notice in the mail box which I did. Since the tenants son refused to accept the notice, I felt it was important to prove the notice was received. Therefore, on the same day, I sent a certified copy of the notice addressed to the tentant through the US mail. Now, I have a few questions concerning this service.

1) Was it "ok" to sent a copy of the notice certified, If not please explain?

2) when the tenants son refused to accept the notice was the service complete when the notice

was left in the mail box at his request, and should I have left two copies instead of one?.

Why not serve again? It should name each known adult occupants and all unknown occupants. If it's refused, post it on the front door and first class mail a copy to each of the named occupants and also to all unknown occupants c/o the tenant who signed the rental agreement.
