Legal Question in Immigration Law in California

I want to become a U.S. Citizen but i got an "assault with deadly weapon" back in 1990. I don't know if I could still become one with that type of charge and plus three additional misdemenaors from other problems i had. I have never had problems when renewing my card and so i just want to make sure before i spend the money. I would appreciate any helpful advise and contact information thank you.

The best thing you can do is consult with an experienced immigration attorney who can pull your criminal record, look at it carefully and evaluate your case. Whether or not you will be successful will depend upon exactly what your were convicted of, how much time, if any you served, and the dates (as in how recent these incidents were.) Generally, when applying for citizenship, USCIS will look back 5 years to assess "good moral character." Therefore given that your "assault with a deadly weapon" happened so long ago, you may be okay. Again, a good attorney will pull your criminal record and look at exactly what your were charged with and convicted of in order to advise you. Best of luck.
