Marriage to an Illegal Alien

Hello, I am an American Citizen and have been dating an Illegal Alien for quite a few years. We want to get married but are unsure if he should travel back to his country and apply for an engagement/fiance Visa and then get married, or just get married without it in and apply for residency.

Not sure how to approach this situation!

If he has entered the country illegally he needs to go back at the end for final interview. If he has entered US witha visa..he does not need to go back you can do the whole process while he stays here.
