Legal Question in Immigration Law in California

Student Visa - Can work 20 hrs?

Question is whether a [Japanese] student studying in US can work outside/unrelated to the school curicculum?

My friend is a computer science major & thinks s/he's allowed to work 20 hrs/wk in a hotel. The job has nothing to do with scool ( not required, nor credits rec'd, & not computer science related ]. Though her school sent a consent letter '' we will allow ..to work anywhere, so long as s/she continues attending our college'' (Los Angeles). My friend's SS card says ''valid to work only with INS authorization''. Tho my friend disagrees, I believe it's INS's, not her school's authorization ... that's needed.

Any thoughts is very much appreciated

Re: Student Visa - Can work 20 hrs?

Hi,

You are correct that your friend can not work outside of school while on a student visa. The only exception to this is the extereme hardship reason, i.e, if she can demonstrate extreme economic necessity to work, she could get a work permit to work outside of the campus.

Hope this helps,

Jacob
