Legal Question in Insurance Law in California

Obtaining employee insurance for a heterosexual domestic partner

In many counties and cities, laws exist that provide some benefits to homosexual couples; benefits that are typically given to married couples. In some of those places, heterosexual domestic parnters can also take advantage of these benefits. I'm concerned with providing my girl friend with health care coverage through my employer. However, when I asked our HR department, they explained that they don't do that. My previous job was in the same county (Los Angeles), but in a different city (Los Angeles/Sylmar-currently) They did provide for such coverage and my employee health plan did cover my girl friend while working for that employer.

Are there any laws that state heterosexual domestic partners are afforded any of the benefits that homosexual domestic partners are? Does Los Angeles County have special benefits for Homosexual domestic partners?

California enacted AB25 at the end of the 2001 Legislative year. I suggest you take a look as it deals with many aspects of domestic partnerships. There were quite a few statutory changes. Try the legislative website.
