Legal Question in Intellectual Property in California

I recently developed an iphone application that keeps stats for all of the nba players. I dont want to break copyright laws, so I havent used any of the graphics from the nba or any other company. I was wondering, i think i need to get licensed to use the nba players names, but im only 17 and just want to have an app i made. Can i get sponsored by the nba, or what is the best way to go about making this app legal?

As far as I know, the names, the team names, and the stats are in the public domain. The logos and trademarks aren't. Yes, maybe you can get sponsored by the NBA. Probably they get lots of crazy ideas from the public and you would be best going through an attorney. An attorney who practices trademark law and whose office is in your area would be best. Maybe because you are 17 he or she won't charge you. What you want to do is set up a demo of your app for the NBA in New York if you can get in to see them.

Think in terms of trademark laws, not copyright laws.

Being 17, regardless of how brilliant, you are still a minor an (unless emancipated) and unable to make most kinds of contracts, which is going to be a kind of impediment for you, for a while, in doing deals or running businesses in the adult business world. Good luck!
