Legal Question in Employment Law in California

I am 18 years old. I was charged with misdemeanor embezlement. I am a first time offender. What punishment should i expect? Do I face jail time or is it just community service? Should I plead non guilty in order to get a Public Defender? or should I plead guilty and hope the judge has mercy?

Unless the prosecutor contacts you and offers a nonjail term, you should plead not guilty and consult with the public defender with regard to the ramifications of the charge. Misdemeanor deputy public defenders may not be very experienced, but unless you can afford better representation it is your best course of action. Pleading guilty will not generate much leniency.

Every crime has potential jail time; misdemeanors carry up to a year in jail, felonies one or more years in prison. No attorney can predict the outcome, nor even give an intelligent opinion, without reviewing and knowing all the charges, evidence, police reports, testimony, priors history, etc. What can you do? Hire an attorney, unless you know how to effectively represent yourself in court against a professional prosecutor intending to convict. No amount of free 'tips and hints' from here or anywhere else are going to effectively help you in your defense, other than the advice to exercise the 5th Amendment right to SHUT UP and do NOT talk to police or ANYONE about the case except an attorney. Most police and prosecutors will happily tell you that 95% of people convict themselves by trying to be 'helpful and cooperative', either during initial contact, questioning, interview or interrogation. If serious about hiring counsel to help in this, and if this is in SoCal courts, feel free to contact me.
