Yup. They can fire you for wearing loafers instead of lace up shoes too. Absent civil service or a union contract with termination protections, an employer can fire you any time for anything except discrimination against a protected classification, such as race or gender, or retaliation against protected conduct, such as union organizing or whistle blowing.
Of course. In general, unless an employee is civil service, in a union, or has a written employment contract, they are an 'at will' employee that can be disciplined or terminated any time for any reason, with or without cause, explanation or notice. With suspicion of crime they have actual 'cause'.
