Can employers force you to be on call?

Can an employer force an employee to be on call if it interferes with employees personal life outside of work?

It depends what your arrangement is. Remember that in California, employees are at-will, which means they can be terminated for most reasons, or no reason, except illegal reasons. Bear that in mind when you take whatever action you decide to take. Try to work things out so that the on-call status is limited to reasonable times, or perhaps limited in frequency. The answer is maybe. An employer can ask or make as part of your job duties being on call. Any work outside of the office should be compensated, however, and employers typically are held to answer when any intrusions into an employee's personal life are excessive.
