when former establishment was contacted for references, the new owners whom I didnt even work for made horrible untrue statements about me

If the statements are provably false statements of fact (Mr. Smith was fired for stealing), as opposed to statements of opinion (we thought Mr. Smith was doing a poor job), you may have a case against the employer.
