missed mandatory meeting with 2 day notice, $200 deducted out of check

on tuesday the 26th of july i was notified i had a mandatory meeting that i had to go to on that thursday, which is the 28th of that month. i said i had prior obligations with traffic school, but i was told i can either go to traffic school and not work here or i can go to the training and miss traffic school. i rescheduled traffic school, and on thursday i left for the mandatory meeting. i got lost on the way to the mandatory meeting in san diego (i live in los angeles) and wasn't going to be able to make it on time (they dismiss latecomers). i was only informed about the MANDATORY meeting on my DAY OFF TWO days in advance. i was not informed by any management nor by the owner that i would have a deduction of $200 taken out of my paycheck for getting lost to the meeting and not being able to make it there. when i received my check on august 5th, i saw that i had a $200 deduction that went to me missing the meeting and for not showing up because i got lost. is it legal to deduct $200 out of someone's paycheck without giving them forewarning and with only 2 day notice of a mandatory event on your day off? what can i do to get my money back? or is it better to press charges against the dealership?

It seems you are alleging that the employer has deducted $200 from your paycheck because you missed a day of work. It is generally not legal for an employer to "fine" or deduct money from an employee for this type of reason. You should first professionally ask the employer for the money and/or the basis for the deduction. If that doesn't work, you can file a complaint with the Division of Labor Standards enforcement. Finally, if the situation escalates, you may want to consult with an employee rights attorney in your area.
