Legal Question in Employment Law in California

Can a potential employer require you to come in for one day just to "try you out"?

I thought this was what a probationary period was for?

I was asked to come in meet with the president and then I will be assigned tasks and observed by other "team members" before they make an offer if any.

Is this legal?
