does a previous employer have the right to slander your character to potenial em

what do i do if a previous employer has slandered my character to potenial employers by stating false acquisation. i was ''supposedly'' laid off due to shortage of work. i heard from my cousin,who works in the same field as me, that my previous employers stated to his boss that i was let go because i took from the job. my earning potenial depends on my reputation. i believe this can hurt my chances i getting a higher pay job my my field. what steps do i take to stop him from ruinning my lively hood.

IF you can prove through credible witnesses they are making FALSE statements of fact, not just their poor opinion of you, that adversely affects your employment or does other provable damage, then you have grounds for a slander complaint. You could have an attorney write and demand they stop and correct the situation, and/or you could file suit.

Actually, it's against the law to say anything that would adversly affect your ability to get the other job (true or otherwise). Usually, they get around it by just not giving an opinion. Potential employers kind of figure out something's up because if there wasn't a problem, they would just say so. It's kind of a way around the rule.
