Legal Question in Employment Law in California

sick leave against policy

To whom it may concern:

My boyfriend works for one of the biggest auto shops in our city. He had to stay home for a couple of days due to a root canal. When I called to ask his employer ( I called their corporate) about how to go about his sick leave ( he never took one before for three years), they said that their employees are not entitled to sick leave. When I asked why they said it was because it was against their policy. I did not probe anymore. Is this true? Can employers with approximately 500 or more employees not provide sick leave? They provide everything else. Vacation, 401K, and holiday pay. Please let me know if what they are doing is right. Thank you for your time and help.

Re: sick leave against policy

they are not required to give any sick leave but it sounds like they are subject to the Family Leave Act which means they must allow up to 12 weeks unpaid leave.
