Legal Question in Employment Law in California

I am working with employer in California and during the time of joining i didn't read the full employee agreement. Now i joined the new employer which was the client i was working for on behalf of my old employer, but that is not direct client of my old employer, there are some layer in between. Now when i resigned they told me that in the employee agreement there was a statement which was saying that if i joined any of client then i have to pay some amount of money to them. Just want to know if such kind of agreement is legal in california. Needs advice

You need to take the actual agreement and facts to a lawyer.
