Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California

Due to being laid off from my job, I had to vacate my apartment. I had about 5 months remaining on my lease and the landlord is pursuing collection. What can I do? What if the apartment gets rented again? Thank you.

You owe the money until the landlord re-rents the apartment or a reasonable time for him to do so passes [usually one month, but in court's discretion]. Tell the landlord why you left and see if you can work out a compromise with him.
