Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California

My rental unit just sold. The old landlord did not give my security deposit to the new landlord of myself. I have been counseled that the old landlord has to turn my security deposit over to the new landlord or myself. I received this counsel from an attorney on this site. The new landlord is requiring a new deposit from me. Since I already paid a security deposit when I moved in over 2 years ago, can the new landlord make me pay a new second deposit just because the old landlord did not give him my original security deposit?

You personally are only required to give one security deposit. The new landlord must go against the old one. It is similar to a situation that you pay your rent in June for the entire month but a new landlord takes over June 15th and does not get the half of your paid rent from the first landlord. You can not be made to pay rent for the second half of June twice. The new landlord is subjected to the terms of the old contract until it expires.
