Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California

Single dwelling home renters rights

we moved in on Feb 1st 2008, begining of April landlords decide to do construction, since then house was broken into and our house hold furniture kictchen have been damaged and we are still paying rent now landlords want to up the rent 50%. I have 2 daughters one is a college student the other is Jr high and are living in dirty aweful conditions, I would like to know if we have a case or if there is any law protecting us as a family, we will not be able to pay the rent that they want to cover the construction and I don't feel that was fair that we put up with the mess and our things were damaged in the process. What can be done, should we get a lawyer? financial losses from break in because construction was not secure and because of contration are over 6000.00. If you could please give me some kind of guidance I would really appreicate it.

Re: Single dwelling home renters rights

Thanks for your statement, and I will try to help, but I need some clarification.

Where was the construction? Was there anything in your lease regarding construction? Are the "dirty awful" conditions in the house, inside. outside, or both. Are they charging you for the construction? What was damaged, and who damaged it? Was the burglary made easier by construction not securing your home?

Please resubmit with answers to the above, or e-mail me at my office.
