Legal Question in Legal Ethics in California

Hi, I was wondering if there is a way, free of charge, to locate the status/update of a class action lawsuit I am being represented in? I am becoming increasingly skeptable of my attorney, and feel like I may be recieving false information from him at this point. I live in Los Angeles County, as does my attorney, which is where the case is being handled as well. I express my gratification in advance for an answer helpful to this matter. Thank you!!

Jamey

You should be able to look up the court file on the court's web site. That will not give you all the information on the status though. You have to callyour attorney, speak to his/her secretary to try to get the information, or to the para-legal handling the matter. If that does not work demand to speak to the attorney and if that does not work tell them that you will be coming to the atttorney's office on X day at Y time and will sit in the waiting room until you are seen. Add that you realize your tlking to the receptionist and anyone waiting there of how you are being treated may have a negative effect on his clients, but there is no way around that except to see you.

If you know the case number, and the class action was filed in the Los Angeles Superior Court, you can check the status in the online registry of actions listed here: http://www.lasuperiorcourt.org/civilCaseSummary/index.asp?CaseType=Civil

My colleagues forget that sometimes the best way to research an issue is good, old-fashioned legwork. If you go down to the courthouse where the case is filed, you have a right to view the actual case file at the courthouse. Whether you'll understand everything in there is a different question, though. Also, the attorneys may be working on things between them that will not be contained in the court file, and Mr. Shers' suggestion about speaking with the attorney makes sense, in that situation.
