Legal Question in Personal Injury in California

I transferred my vehicle (pinkslip) in California to my 21 year old son. Will that protect me against any liability should he cause a serious accident? If so, should I also put his car insurance in his name (separate policy)? He is a fulltime student in college without any discernible income. The new title, registration and insurance coverage will have my primary address.
