Legal Question in Real Estate Law in California

Property tax on real property passed from father to son

My father who passed away 6 mos ago left his home to me, his son. My father lived in his home for 35 years and paid a nominal fee of 200.00 dollars a year in property taxes. Now the city has reassessed my father's property (now my home) at 2000.00 dollars a year in property taxes! We are talking about a tenfold increase in taxes! Is this lawful?
