Legal Question in Real Estate Law in California

Tenant broke lease, left utilities and rent unpaid

My tenant moved out two months early and owes for May rent. She had a lease through the end of May, 2009. The lease stated that she was responsible for paying all of the utilities. I needed the utilities to be on to properly show the home. I recently found a new tenant and pro-rated the rent. The old tenant owes for her prorata share of the utilities, gas and water until the new tenant came along. I gave the old tenant the utility bills. I am getting stuck with the bills because the old tenant says she was not living there, so why should she have to pay gas and water? I want to know, in California, if a tenant breaks their lease and their lease requires them to pay all of the utilities, are they responsible to pay for the same utilities, whether gas or water when they move out until the end of their lease?
