Legal Question in Real Estate Law in California

Title Transfer

I gave a personal loan and was given part-owner on a title to a property in San Francisco, California. All of this was done legally. The house was refinances which means all outstanding debts were to be paid off. I was not paid however. They said they contacted me but I never received a notice. Shouldn't they have some kind of proof that they tried to contact me? Is it legal just to "write me off" of the load with out paying me? I talked to the original lawyer but he said he doesn't do this kind of thing? Was legal course should I take?

Thank you for the help.
