In debt and dead???

My grandmother has just recently passed away and we have discovered that she is at least $100k in debt. She has no estate and owns nothing. She has no spouse. She does have two daughters. What happens to the debtors if there is nothing to collect? Can they come after her daughters?

Generally, the answer is that the debtors can't go after the daughters. I say generally, because to the extent that the daughters receive anything in the estate, it will be subject to being taken by the creditors.
