Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in California

my father left a will that was dated from 1986, when all four of his children were under the age of 18. the executor of the will doesn't want to be responsible now that we are all over 18. the estate would be less that 75k and can easily be divided without involving the executor. Do I still need to file the will with courts in CA, go thru probate, in order to get permission to be the personal representative in order to sell his vehicles and small property?
