Legal Question in Criminal Law in Canada

Grand Theft Auto

A guy started a fight with me, we fought, I beat the crap out of him, he was bleeding out of the ear, he asked me to take him to the hospital, I did, his car broke down on the highway, I took a truck from a farmyard and took him to the hospital, I went to take the truck back to the farmers, farmyard and I hit a car and got the truck stuck. All I'm getting charged with is Grand Theft Auto, this is my first ever crime and I've never been in trouble before. How do I plead, and how do I get out of this mess, should I have a lawyer? I already told the cop everything yesterday.

Re: Grand Theft Auto

Are you in Canada? There is no such offence in Canada as "grand theft auto." There is however, the general offence of theft over $5,000. Perhaps that is what you mean.

Your story is interesting and it appears the police believed you because you didn't get charged with anything else.

You should still get a lawyer. It might be possible to justify your taking the vehicle as a medical emergency. That would be a big "maybe." However, perhaps a lawyer could work out a deal for a lesser charge. The offence of "take auto without consent" would be a good alternative.
