They are helpful, but they must be followed to the letter (timeframe, form, amount) or they are unenforceable.

As for negatives, ultimately a lien may be of little use unless you foreclose the lien. That requires a lawsuit so unless the lien is for a considerable amount (mid to high 5 figures), the cost of attorney fees and filing fees make it economically prohibitive to foreclose.
