Education

My child's private school will not give us a copy of her high school transcript. She has graduated in good standing and all fees have been paid.

Do we have a legal right to have a copy of her transcript?

FERPA gives parents rights to review the student's records, but does not say (at least in the version I read which was several years old) the parents are entitled to a copy.

If all fees have been paid and the student is in good standing, then the school has a legal, contract-based obligation to provide transcripts. If they fail to do so, they can be liable, e.g., if the student wishes to apply for a job or for admission to a post-secondary institution, then such applications will be precluded without certified transcripts. Provide them as soon as possible with a letter requesting a copy(s) of a transcript. If one is not produced within 5 business days, then hire a local lawyer to bring an action for breach of contract, along with injunctive relief. Good luck.
